Deep Blue Soapbox

Building on the success of Enterprise Soapbox, Deep Blue Soapbox has been developed for the KS2 market.

It's still working along the ethos of 'a Business in a box' and gives Primary school children a fantastic opportunity to get a feel for what it's like to start (and run) their own soap-making business, learn about enterprise and have fun in the process.

They can decide which type of market they would like to aim their product at. They can even design and produce their own packaging to reflect their chosen clientele and then sell their soaps at a school fundraising event as a type of Social Enterprise.

However, making soap isn't only what Deep Blue Soapbox is about. The kit also comes with 5 lesson plans which form the basis of a Deep Blue Soapbox enterprise programme. Each lesson can each be run over a ½ day or longer and through these your pupils will learn to understand about water use in their homes, what soapy products are used at home and how this water is purified (there's an experiment for them to do, as well), put together a business plan and stretch their maths skills in line with the KS2 maths curriculum.

The lesson plans can be followed at a time to suit the teachers - either concurrently or over a number of days/weeks but we have found that the longer the time frame, the more engaged the children become as they become more engaged in the programme and anticipate what is coming next...

The Deep Blue Soapbox kit comes complete with:

  • Enough soap-base to make 5-600 novelty size soaps (about twice the size of an ice-cube) or about 140 'regular' sized soap bars.
  • 3 different perfumes, with applicators
  • 3 different colours
  • A jug & spatula
  • 4 novelty moulds with a sea-based theme
  • 5 lesson plans, on CD-Rom
  • 2 box templates, on CD-Rom
  • A copy of the KS4 handbook, on CD Rom, as a reference tool for soap making instructions and other educational ideas

Like Enterprise Soapbox, the kit itself is extremely adaptable and can be used for a wide range of applications. We have used the soap-making programme with:
